In-Service Programs 

How Can I Help Others Understand?

The in-services are specifically for Educators and School Faculty and Staff, Medical Residents, Nurses, Elementary Age Children, Pre-Teens, and Teenagers, but are easily adapted for any audience.

 

Educator In-Service Program

PA-TSA provides a 120-minute program for Educators, Administrators, School Psychologists, School Nurses, and Support Personnel. tAct 48 credits are available for Educators. Topics include Tourette Syndrome, other co-morbid conditions, classroom accommodations and more. Presenters offer their professional experiences gained while helping school districts across the state accommodate students with this complex disorder.

PRESENTATION

  • Power Point presentation(Equipment provided at location or brought by PA- TSA)
  • Handouts of presentation for note taking
  • Information packages containing a CD with materials and brochures
  • Excerpt of a TS film 
  • Attendees experience "having a tic"
  • Successful accommodations for Tourette Syndrome in the classroom
  • Question and Answer session

FEE SCHEDULE

  • $300.00 up to 25 attendees
  • $400.00 26-35 attendees
  • $500.00 36-45 attendees
  • $600.00 46-55 attendees
  • Mileage reimbursement of .50 cents/mile
  • Estimates can be provided prior to arranging the training


Peer In-Service Presentations

   PA-TSA provides an age appropriate in-service program for the classmates of a child with Tourette Syndrome. The presentation focuses upon different disabilities children may encounter in their lives and emphasizes the appropriate response to those with differences. The length of the program is adapted to the age of the classmates.

Elementary School

  • A general dialogue of what makes people different from each other
  • Overview of Medical conditions that may cause differences
  • A discussion of Tourette Syndrome and what makes it unique
  • 10 min. video "You’ve Got A Friend" by Danya International, Inc. or 15 min DVD "I Have Tourette's But Tourette's Doesn't have Me" by HBO
  • Discussion of how to treat those who are different, or with disabilities
  • Interactive Activity to experience a tic and OCD
  • Question & Answer Session **can include the identified child with TS with family permission
  • Handouts included depending of the size of the presentation 

Middle School—High School

  • A general dialogue of disabilities and perceptions of disabilities
  • Overview of TS and accompanying disorders
  • 15 min. video "I Have Tourette's But Tourette's Doesn't have Me" by HBO (grades 5-8) or 17 min video "The Real World of Tourette Syndrome-Teens Talk About Life With Tourette Syndrome" by Danya International, Inc. (grades 9-12)
  • Discussion of how TS may impact a teenager’s life
  • Interactive Activity to experience a tic and OCD
  • Question and answer session **can include the identified child with TS with their permission
  • Handout of TS and Teens

FEE SCHEDULE

Speaker Fee of $50 Mileage Reimbursement of .50 cents/mile


Medical Resident Program

"A Partnership of Understanding" is a one hour PowerPoint presentation designed to create clinical awareness of Tourette Syndrome and its associated disorders, as well as the effects on clients and families.

Appropriate For Residents:

  • In Neurology Rotations
  • In Pediatric Rotations
  • In Psychiatric Rotations
  • In Neuropsychiatric Rotations

Presentation Includes:

  • Tourette Syndrome : signs & symptoms
  • Common misconceptions
  • Medicinal Treatments
  • Physician's role with parents, patients, & schools
  • Packets of infomation specially created for medical residents
  • Video presentaion produced by the National Tourette Syndrome Assoc.
  • Personal experiencees of advocates

Cost

  • An honorarium is requested to defray the cost of gas & materials

Equipment Needed:

  • VCR
  • Television
  • Laptop with Projector or Computer with Projector or Overhead Transparency Projector


Nursing Program

"Understanding Patients with Tourette Syndrome" is a one hour PowerPoint presentaion created to produce awareness of Tourette Syndrome and its associated disorders, and to suggest appropriate nursing strategies in dealing with them in the clinical setting.

 

Appropriate While Studying:

  • Neurological Conditions
  • Pediatric Diagnosis (the common time TS is diagnosed)
  • Psychiatric Conditions (because of the high occurance of comorbid disorders)

Presentaion Includes:

  • Tourette Syndrome: signs & symptoms
  • Diagnostic Criteria
  • Treatment Options
  • Medication: Options, Side Effects, ect.
  • Overview of Common Co-Morbid Disorders
  • Packet of Infomation Specially Created for Nurses
  • Video Presentation

Cost:

  • Honorarium of Donation to defray the cost of materials and travel expenses is greatly appreciated
